The First Weekend

An early start for the first weekend of kit ownership saw me heading for the garage with a mixture of feelings from the anticipation of what I was about to do.  A review of the manual and a quick sort of the first box and I was about to fix the first part of the kit to the car.

spot the obvious mistakeIn my novice haste attaching the first part was also my first mistake, I attached the top wishbone  to the wrong side of the car, this meant the rose joint was pointing upwards (see picture, click to enlarge).  My mistake was not apparent to me until I came to fit the uprights and then it was obvious.

The rest of the suspension went on reasonably easy, however mistakes where made and I had to re-assemble some sections.  For instance I did not add the sleeve and copper slip to the top damper fixing when I first fitted it, it was not until I noticed the sleeve left over that I realised my mistake.  However in my defence the manual only mentioned the bottom damper fixing.

So the first days effort saw all the first section completed, with everything correctly torqued up.  My only concern was the front top wishbone fixing, where the bolt did not fully engage the nyloc bolt.  It later transpired after talking to SimonP that I did not have to use the washers, checking the manual it never mentioned them so why I added them is a mystery.

A later start on the Sunday saw me nearly complete the next section in the manual, 'steering'. This proved relatively easy and the only issue I had was that the steering rack was not centred when I fitted the track rod ends to the uprights.  The implication of this is that I disregarded the recommended settings for this and now will have to reset it.

Momo attachedThe most satisfying part being when I attached the removable Momo steering wheel and when I turned it I could see the uprights turn accordingly.  Still to do are to fix the metal plate and 'cheese wedge' to the pedal box as I did not have any silicon sealant.
